Wordle

Six tries to find one five-letter word. Small, tidy and the perfect daily ritual.

Each peak is one measure from the Map Key. The higher the ground, the better it scored.

The terrain

Type a word and each letter is marked as in the right place, in the word but misplaced, or absent. Use the clues to narrow down the answer in six guesses or fewer. Hard mode forces you to use every hint you have found.

A typical walk

There is one puzzle a day, which is the whole charm: it cannot swallow your evening. Sharing your coloured grid without the answer has become a small social ritual among friends and families.

Tolls and fair trade

Wordle is free. It now lives on The New York Times site, which promotes its paid games subscription and may ask you to log in to save stats across devices. You can ignore both and still play every day. Note that it uses American spelling.

Good going

  • A healthy, bounded daily habit
  • Instant and accessible
  • Great to share

Rough going

  • Only one puzzle a day
  • American spellings
  • Subscription prompts

Surveyor's note

For everyone who likes words, in five minutes a day. Not for players who want a long session.
